Notes:
Stephen Pate (<1765
- 1820s)
appears to be the likely father of Thomas Pate,
since he is the only Richmond
County, NC Pate who had a son of the right age as indicated in the
census of 1790, 1800 and 1810. Thomas Pate first appears in the 1820
census. 1820 is also the last year that Stephen Pate appears in NC; he
is not found in the 1830 (when he would have been at least age 65) or
1840 NC census. However, he appears to be mentioned as a
purchaser in a real estate document dated 1827. ?? His neighbors
noted in 1820
also appear in 1830a
1830b.
Stephen Pate may have been a Justice of the Peace or pastor (but
possibly just a witness), since he
is listed as such in the following Richmond County, NC marriage bond:
Mr. Aaron Wallis married to Miss Frances Norton on 12 April 1798.
Stephen Pate.
Stephen Pate may have been alive in 1827...

In a book by Myrtle N. Bridges Estate Records of Richmond County, North
Carolina pg. 501
The estate of Edward Gauntlett - 1827 in account of the sale of
perishable property were these purchasers:
Tryam McFarland, Mrs. Gauntlett [the widow], Daniel Beesley, Nathaniel
Gibson, Alexander Patterson, Murdoch Morrison, George Bullard , John L.
Gillis, William Wright, John Buchanan, Samuel Goodwin , Daniel Goodwin,
Joshua Brigman, John Gibson, Daniel B. Brown, Isaac Williamson, Stephen Pate, Sabrie Wright, Jonathan
Hailey, James B. Smith, and Daniel Campbell.
The Samuel Goodwin here is my great-great-grandfather who was on the
1820/30/40/50 census of Richmond Co., NC and then in 1850/60 in
Marlboro Co., SC.; he married Drusilla Bright in SC, daughter of
Charles Bright. I don't know who the Daniel Goodwin might be.
Does any one know of a Daniel Goodwin who was in the area of North or
South Carolina in that time period??? The George Bullard is
connected to the family by a brother of Drusilla Bright Goodwin. His
daughter also named Drusilla married George Bullard. I put stars by
Daniel as I don't know anything about him and underlined the others as
I do have information on them. appreciate any information.
